Can You Photoshop Your Life with Better Decisions, Jerry?

The short answer is, you can now!

Parks & Recreation is pretty much my favorite show and Leslie Knope is my shero. Now TV Squad makes it so easy to Ron Swanson yourself. Obviously I did.

I’m a Cutie Patootie

I’ve been posting this video to Facebook and Twitter all the time lately, but I just can’t stop sharing it with people. I’m pretty sure I’ve been blocked on Gchat by most people just so they stop getting the link. But watch it once and you’ll be sending it to everyone you know, too. I dare you not to.

He’s Talking About Handjobs!

Last night I saw Strange Powers, a documentary about Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields.

I used this picture because of the kitty.

It was really good and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Stephin or any of his bands, but my Magnetic Fields experience has been forever tainted by an unforgettable concert a few years ago.

When I was a young eighteen year old gal on my own at the big University, I sucked. I didn’t do anything pretty much, nearly all my friends were from my dorm (future college students, beware. Don’t let this happen to you because it is such a bad idea) and I spent my entire first semester recovering from an epic bought of mono that lasted all summer and landed me in two urgent care centers and an emergency room for megasteroid injections. That’s another thing to avoid when you start college.

But then my sophomore year happened! And it was so much better! I joined the school radio station!

Adventures in Craigslisting

So about a year ago my roommie and bff Ashtar and I were hanging out bored one day. I was studying for the GRE and she was applying for jobs (underemployment is a serious issue, dudes), so obviously instead we were being awesome on the internet. Ashley found a really interesting post on Craigslist, and thought that we should reply to it. Obviously that was a much better idea than anything that could potentially make our lives better and/or more fulfilling. Because this was hilarious. It involves hoarding, drug addiction, lying about cable bills and pooping on oneself as a result of medical studies. It’s basically my favorite thing ever.

I open the door. You explain that you’re from Comcast, and you need $140 for the cable bill TODAY. I ask you in, and show you to the kitchen. I take your jacket, and ask you to sit down. As I do this, I suddenly feel like Chris Hansen of Dateline NBC’s To Catch A Predator series. I catch myself starting to laugh quietly as I think of the absurdity of both the show and my current situation. I offer you a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. You ask for the hot chocolate, explaining that it’s cold, but you avoid caffeine. I put the kettle on for water, smiling ruefully. I get out two mugs, since I’ll be joining you, then sit down across from you at the table.

“So, about the bill,” you say.

Top 20 Songs of 2010

This is a few days late getting this up here, but I wanted to wait until I had shared this mix with some people and I didn’t want it to “leak.” See, one of my friends recently started a  mix CD trading club, and when one of the people designated to make a mix for this week’s meeting was stumped and didn’t want to do it, I volunteered. I’d already started putting together my list of the best tracks of the year, mostly because I don’t ever listen to enough new albums enough times to put together a best albums of the year list. I did that once, and it was really good, but that was back when I was in college and worked in College Radio. I had to listen to a million new albums all the time. But now I’m a Grown Up and I don’t have the time or energy or enthusiasm to listen to that much new stuff. That’s really hard unless you work at a radio station or a magazine or a record store or something. I just watch Law & Order: SVU all the time. But even if I only listened to, say, 25 new albums over the course of 2010, that’s about 350 songs, plus other things I hear around the place. So let’s say I heard 500 new songs this year, one way or another (probably on Glee). That’s a pretty good pool to pull 20 songs from! And so, without further ado, my top 20 tracks of 2010!

Lessons from a Romantic Comedy: The Ugly Truth

I’m sure you all know what movie I’m talking about. It came out a few years ago. Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler starred in this fine piece of cinematic achievement as an uptight television producer who needs to learn to relax in order to fall in love, and the wild and carefree misogynist who manages to make both her tv show and her love life successful, respectively. It’s pretty much everything you’d imagine it to be, and yet somehow even worse. Basically, if I had a hammer, I’d smash this movie before I’d smash the patriarchy. It was surprisingly anti-woman (and I was expecting it to be pretty fucking anti-woman), considering Katherine Heigl is the star of it. This is the woman who spent years after she was in Knocked Up complaining about how misogynistic that movie was. I usually support any celebrity who says she’s a feminist, no matter what she does, but seeing this movie makes me want to rip up Heigl’s feminist card.

The Ugly Truth is full of lessons for women, because at its core it’s a makeover movie. Gerard Butler, the misogynistic television personality, and Katherine Heigl learns to hate him when she stumbles onto his cable access show, calls in, and discovers he’s an asshole! But then, TWIST! She goes to work the next day and finds out her boss has hired him to be on the news show she produces. And she has to make him happy because he makes the show successful. Oh no! Butler proceeds to give K.Heig a total personality makeover because she is a “psychotic, neurotic control freak” who will never find a man to love her because her standards are too high and also the control freak thing.
